Abstract

Wars in space will have far-reaching and catastrophic consequences that will not only affect national security, but also global communications, economics and the environment. Today, the primary international agreement
that limits military activities in space is the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The treaty mainly forbids the deployment of nuclear weapons in space, however, it does not prohibit the deployment of non-nuclear space weaponry. This led the United States to prioritize ‘freedom of action in space’ given its pursuit of the development of space-based missile defence through the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) in the early 1980s.
